i don\'t know of anyone who has used their service so I can\'t tell you what pickabarrel is like. It seems, in my opinion, like Beach groceries which is based out of Miami, perhaps with cheaper prices(?). I think it might be a good option if you are on the island already and want things shipped to your house. It\'s interesting that the cost is so little because customs is usually a little more than $50 usd in addition to what you pay for shipping. Ask lots of questions before you order anything.

Melissa, you are correct about Astaphans. If you fax them an order (or e-mail or call in), they will deliver items to your house. They don\'t carry a lot of American brands but if you are okay with that, it\'s probably your best option besides going down to Roseau.

Hi Neil,
Well we don\'t live there yet. Also moving for my husband to start Jan. semester. But I looked at the website and it looks like a great way to have stuff delivered to your door but that the products are from the island (as opposed to the U.S.). I\'m trying to find a cheap option for having things like Pampers sent to me instead of using diapers I can find in Dominica but looks like I\'ll just have to use Tropical Shipping for that.

For anyone who is on the island now and knows, is my assessment of this website accurate and can\'t you get the same type delivery service directly from Astaphan\'s? I thought I saw a post about that.

Thanks,
Melissa

Anyone used packabarrel for groceries, etc? Seems like a straight forward way to get stuff, and prices don\'t seem too outragous. Any feedback would be interesting.

Neil,
The books I listed were not my husband\'s. I listed for a fellow spouse who\'s husband is currently in fourth semester. They are books he bought and didn\'t want to ship back with him. As you will see, most people do not keep their textbooks. The only doctor\'s \"kit\" he bought was the stethascope. The rest he will either borrow or buy used since one only uses the instruments a couple of times.

Thanks for the insight. I also was wondering if your husband got any other equipment like the \"doctor\'s kit\" or oto/ophthalmoscope.
I noticed that you had posted some books for sale inthe classifieds. Just curious if those are the ones your husband used, doesn\'t need anymore or what?
I\'m thinking I may order some select things through the bookstore to make sure I have a few things, but wait til I get there so see what more I want. Any more suggestions for a short list, I\'m all ears (or eyes).

Thanks again!

Hi Neil,
Welcome!!! From our personal experience, leave buying of the books until you get to the island. DO NOT buy everything and anything under the sun. You can find used books much cheaper once you get here and if you\'re really stuck and think you need something, then purchase them from the bookstore or isalnd thrift. My husband bought no books and just signed them out from the library when he needed. For him personally, he hardly had time to look at any textbooks. The only one I know he could recommend is the Netter\'s Clinical Anatomy book. Save money and shipping weight/space. In case you didn\'t know, Amazon.com does deliver books to Dominica.

As for supplies, bring lots of gloves for the labs. We\'ve gone through one whole box during the semeter. You probably need 2-3 boxes. I hope those spouses whose partners are in upper semester can give more insight. My husband is only in 2nd semester.

Hi, I\'ll be starting in Jan 09. I am wondering if you (or spouses) can shed any light on what books on the \"list\" are really worthwhile and what are not so much... Seems like a waste of money and paper to order everything under the sun.
Also, I know I could order through the bookstore, through Island Thrift, or even bring a few from here. The bookstore seems the safest route...but a little more $. Any thoughts?

thanks,
Neil

Hi! My husband is currently doing his AICM (5th semester) with Synergy Medical in Saginaw, Michigan. If anyone has questions about the program here from a student\'s point of view or questions about life here as a spouse, feel free to contact me. Since this is only the second semester AICM has been offered here there wasn\'t a lot of information about what to expect when we made the transition from Dominica. Thankfully, we really like it here and the cost of living is significantly lower than Miami! If you are considering moving here or have been accepted, don\'t hesitate to use me as a resource!

I\'d have to agree about the Golden Dragon. We are an Asian family and are pretty particular about Asian food. They do a great job with the lobster and the meat dishes with vegetables. Even the sweet and sour chicken is good (and we normally don\'t eat it). The family has always been so courteous to us and just wonderful to our kids.

We had a great trip to the Golden Dragon restaurant in Glanvilla last night. I had the lobster, and the presentation was awesome! Seriously, I\'m not an expert or anything, but it was awesome, and a great price too! It was great to eat somewhere that was nice and clean.

Heaven\'s Best has great rates on rooms - especially nice for when parents come to visit.
